Elopement Planning Checklist

Planning an elopement requires a lot of consideration to ensure a smooth and memorable experience. I’ve been there as I planned my own elopement back in 2016. It can definitely be an adventure full of excitement and anticipation (and maybe a little bit of anxiety lol). As an elopement photographer now, I understand how special and intimate your elopement day is going to be. So I planned this very in depth checklist, that I wish I had when I eloped myself, with lots of details that will help you plan your elopement smoothly and be able to create beautiful memories that you'll cherish forever!

01. Choose a date –

This is a obvious one - choose a few back to back dates that works for you and your partner and plan around it. Consider the season of the year and weather, and make sure the date is feasible for any essential vendors and service providers you plan to hire. It’s really helpful when you can provide 2-3 dates that you’re flexible with. Once you have the date, you can start planning for a location, timeline for ceremony and photos!

02. Choose a location –

Considering you’re eloping locally — choose a location a beautiful location that suits your vision and personalities - it could be a breathtaking mountain top or a charming city street. Whatever you choose, make sure it speaks to you both - even if it’s just for portraits after ceremony. The day is yours, go to wherever you’d like to.

If you’re eloping out of state or on a far destination - choosing the location first should be priority so you can work on searching local vendors to your elopement.

03. Permits –

Some locations (usually National Parks, Museums and Historical Houses, etc) may require permits or fees to elope and have a small ceremony on sight. Check on the location website or contact before hand to ask if they require any permits, if photography is allowed & if any fees apply. Sometimes extra arrangements like ceremony in one place and photos in another place are required - but totally worth it to carry on your vision. That’s why having an elopement is so efficient - you can be flexible and have multiple locations!

04. Marriage laws –

Boring, but necessary! Different places have different requirements for getting married, so make sure you do your research based where you’re eloping. Look into what documents you'll need and what the requirements are for obtaining a marriage license.Sometimes logistics work better if you quickly elope locally and plan for photos / share of vows later.

To get a marriage license in Boston, the couple must apply in person at the City Clerk's office with a valid photo ID and social security number. There is a $50 fee to apply, a 3-day waiting period & the license is valid for 60 days.

05. Find an officiant –

Decide if you want simple share of vows ceremony or if you want to incorporate traditional or religious aspects to it. Then find an officiant who can perform the type of ceremony you prefer and have experience crafting an unique experience. You can also have a friend quickly obtain a license online to officiate for you! You can also plan if you want to make any rituals like lighting a candle together, a hand-fasting ceremony, a time capsule with letters - there are so many options and can get creative!

06. Book travel and accommodations (if any) –

If planning an elopement outside of your state - book your travel and accommodation for you and your partner as soon as you decide on a date and have a location in mind or already booked. If you plan to bring along/invite any guests, make sure you arrange accommodation for them too, like blocking a section of a hotel for your guests.

And even if you’re not eloping out of state, it’s a nice treat to stay in a nice hotel or airbnb on your elopement day - you can get ready together and then spend the night there celebrating. Plan accordingly!

07. Schedule hair and makeup –

If you plan to have hair and makeup done professionally, schedule it in advance. You can book a trial with your make up and hair artist to make sure you have what you want. Plan to allow enough time for the getting-ready process, so you can enjoy the experience and don’t feel rushed. Additionally, you can hire a photographer for extra hours to document the getting ready process and detail photos.

08. Plan your attire –

Choose an outfit that fits the location and your personalities. Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful - it can me a whimsical dress, a jumpsuit with a jacket, a custom suit or even just a simple outfit that makes you fell like yourself. Don't forget to pack any accessories that you may need or want to add for extra spiciness.

09. Hire a photographer/videographer –

Yay, time to choose your photographer! As an elopement photographer, I recommend you choose someone whose style and approach resonates with you. Make sure you schedule a time to meet with them and discuss your vision and plans for the day. Hiring an elopement photographer is a must to capture and preserve the memories of your special day. They offer professional quality photos, stress-free experience, knowledge on planning an elopement, location and light expertise, customized service, and lasting memories after your day is over.

10. Plan your timeline –

Create a timeline that includes the getting ready time, travel to locations, ceremony, photos, and any activities you have planned for the day. Make sure to allow time for any travel or unforeseen circumstances. Planning a timeline for your elopement is important because it helps you stay organized and ensures that everything runs smoothly. With a timeline, you can create a step-by-step plan for your day, outlining when and where everything will happen. This can help you avoid any confusion or miscommunications, and ensures that you and your photographer don't miss any important moments.

11. Choose your flowers –

Decide if you want flowers like a bouquet & boutonniere and select blooms that complements your outfit and the location. I can recommend a florist who specializes in elopement bouquets, if you want. Having flowers at your elopement can add a pop of color, texture, romance and timeless touch to your photos, creating visual appeal and adding even more emotional depth. They create a natural, organic element that can complement the landscape and add visual interest to your images. Also, you can always dry your bouquet later and have a timeless keepsake of your day.

12. Celebrate! –

Yay, it's time to celebrate! Plan a romantic dinner or have a picnic. Savor the moment with your loved one and cherish the memories. Having a dinner or celebration party after your elopement is a great way to commemorate your special day and share the joy and happiness with your loved ones. It's a chance to celebrate your love and commitment, and create lasting memories with family and friends as well. Additionally, it can be a way to thank those who have supported you throughout your relationship and celebrate the start of your new life together.
